| Can I apply for a Work Permit myself ? | |||||||
| NO, only the UK company offering you employment can apply for a Work Permit on your behalf. |
| Can I travel to the UK before my work permit is issued for a visit? | |||||||
Yes, provided you do NOT work here and that you satisfy all the conditions relating to visitors, for example limiting your activities to attending meetings on behalf of your overseas employer and only coming to the UK for a very short period. However, we recommend that you avoid visiting the UK during the processing of your application. If an Immigration Officer suspects that you are coming to work in the UK before your permit has been issued, you could be refused entry. |
| Can I travel abroad whilst on a work permit? | |||||||
You are free to travel abroad whilst your work permit is still valid. If you are a visa national you will not need to obtain a fresh UK Entry visa for your return to the UK, unless your work permit is valid for 6 months or less and you did not obtain a multiple re-entry visa. When travelling, you must carry your passport, your original work permit and if you were required to register with the police, your original police certificate or registration booklet, and have these available to produce to the Immigration Officer on your return entry. |
| Can I get a work permit extension ? | |||||||
| If you are required to stay here longer than the duration originally granted, it is possible to apply for an extension of your work permit. The extension application must be submitted before your current permit expires. |
| Can my family join me in the UK ? | |||||||
The Immigration Rules enable certain members of your family to accompany you to the UK as dependents of a Work Permit holder. Your partner and any children under 18 must first obtain Entry Clearance to accompany you as dependents before they come to the UK. Entry Clearance is obtained from your nearest British Embassy or High Commission. Unlike the work permit holder, the spouse may take up any legal employment without a work permit and may change jobs without permission. The immigration rules allow the partners of long-standing common law relationships and same sex relationships to be treated in the same way as a spouse, but documentary evidence needs to be produced to show at least 4 years of a continuous, permanent relationship. The Work Permit holder should be able to support their dependents without needing to rely on public funds and benefits. |
| What dependents can I bring to the UK? | |||||||
Unless you are an EEA national coming to work in the UK, the only dependent relatives you can bring with you are your husband or wife, and your children under age 18. Special rules exist for other relatives if you become permanently resident in UK. |

| If I am a student or visitor to the UK, can I change to full time employment ? | |||||||
You may be eligible for a work permit, depending on your Skills and Qualifications. |
| How long will the whole process take? | |||||||
A Work Permit will usually be available within 1-2 weeks. Processing times are currently decreasing and Work Permits UK aims to process 90% of work permit applications within 1 week of submission by the second quarter of 2001 . However, during times of peak demand and during holiday periods (particularly late July to the end of September, and mid December to the middle of January) processing times may increase. Because of security clearance procedures, applications for Russian nationals take a little longer, and for nationals of North Korea , Libya , Iraq , and China (PRC) the process can take even longer. |
| How soon can I begin work? | |||||||
If you are currently present in the UK, you may begin work as soon as Work Permits UK print your approval letter. |
| What happens once the Work Permit is issued? | |||||||
| If you are already IN the UK when the permit is issued, Work Permits UK will make a recommendation to the Home Office once they have made their decision. The Home Office may request your Passport, to enable the transfer of conditions form current visa status to new Work Permit status. If you are OUTSIDE of the UK, they will require the original permit to enter the UK, this could be received via courier within two working days. Commonwealth Nationals are required to present their permit to the Immigration Officer on arrival in the UK, who will then transfer the conditions of approval into your passport. All other nationalities will be required to gain prior Entry Clearance from their nearest British High Commission , and it is worth noting that this may take time for the relevant embassy to process the required entry clearance. |
| What if I or the company wants to end my employment? | |||||||
A work permit is NOT a contract of employment; it gives the sponsoring company permission to employ you, and you permission to work for that specific employer. Neither of you require permission to end the employment, but the Home Office should be informed in writing. Write to: ICU 2, Work Permits, 17th Floor, Lunar House, Wellesley Road, Croydon, CR9 2BY |
| How long can the permit last? | |||||||
Work permits can be issued for up to five years. |
| When will I be able to live in the UK permanently? | |||||||
Once you have spent 4 continuous years in the UK as a work permit holder in full time employment, you can apply to the Home Office to remain here indefinitely. |
